Omega-3 Fatty Acid Supplements May Benefit Testicular Function in Young Men

Consuming fish oil supplements is positively associated with semen volume and total sperm count, larger testicular size, higher calculated free testosterone to luteinizing hormone (LH) ratio, and lower follicle-stimulating hormone and LH levels in young, healthy men, according to results from a study published in JAMA Network Open.

A team of investigators conducted a cross-sectional study in young Danish men to assess whether taking omega-3 fatty acid supplements — including fish oil— was linked to improved testicular function, measured by semen quality and reproductive hormone levels.

Creatine Arms T Cells for the Battle against Cancer

UCLA scientists report that creatine, the organic acid that is popularly taken as a supplement by athletes and bodybuilders, serves as a molecular battery for immune cells by storing and distributing energy to power their fight against cancer. They say their study, conducted in mice and published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, is the first to show that creatine uptake is critical to the anti-tumor activities of CD8 T cells (aka killer T cells). The researchers also found that creatine supplementation can improve the efficacy of existing immunotherapies.

“Because oral creatine supplements have been broadly utilized by bodybuilders and athletes for the past three decades, existing data suggest they are likely safe when taken at appropriate doses,” said Lili Yang, PhD, a member of the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCLA and the study’s senior author. “This could provide a clear and expedient path forward for the use of creatine supplementation to enhance existing cancer immunotherapies.”

Cérebros de crianças ficam menores quando elas são negligenciadas, indica estudo

Um começo de vida de negligência, privações e adversidade pode fazer com que uma pessoa cresça com cérebro menor, sugere uma pesquisa da universidade King’s College London, no Reino Unido.

Os pesquisadores acompanharam crianças adotadas que passaram um tempo em orfanatos romenos de péssima qualidade. Elas cresceram com cérebros 8,6% menores que outras crianças adotadas que não vivenciaram maus tratos.

“Eu me lembro de ver imagens de TV dessas instituições e elas eram chocantes”, disse à BBC News Brasil o professor Edmund Sonuga-Barke, que liderou a pesquisa.

Sonuga-Barke diz que as crianças eram “acorrentadas aos seus berços, sujas e desnutridas”. Elas eram fisicamente e psicologicamente privadas de contato e estímulos. Não tinham brinquedos e ficavam frequentemente doentes.

Extreme low-carb diet may speed aging and dull cognition, Japanese study finds

Continuing an extreme low-carbohydrate diet stringently for a long time may accelerate aging and lead to a shorter life span, according to a recent study by a group of Japanese scientists.

While pointing out that a low-carb diet is effective in reducing visceral fat and preventing blood sugar spikes, Tsuyoshi Tsuzuki, associate professor in agricultural science at Tohoku University, stressed that it “should be supervised by experts as part of medical treatment.”

In the research project, Tsuzuki and colleagues divided laboratory mice with life expectancies of about a year into three groups — one fed with a balanced diet, one with a fatty diet and one with a low-carb diet with increased protein.

Don’t make major decisions on an empty stomach

We all know that food shopping when hungry is a bad idea but new research from the University of Dundee suggests that people might want to avoid making any important decisions about the future on an empty stomach.

The study, carried out by Dr Benjamin Vincent from the University’s Psychology department, found that hunger significantly altered people’s decision-making, making them impatient and more likely to settle for a small reward that arrives sooner than a larger one promised at a later date.

Participants in an experiment designed by Dr Vincent were asked questions relating to food, money and other rewards when satiated and again when they had skipped a meal.

While it was perhaps unsurprising that hungry people were more likely to settle for smaller food incentives that arrived sooner, the researchers found that being hungry actually changes preferences for rewards entirely unrelated to food.
