The answer to weight loss isn’t always low-calorie, low-fat foods. In fact, many healthy sources of food are high in fat or carbs. In the video below, host and dietitian Joe Leech explains the benefits of five weight loss-friendly foods you may have thought were fattening.
Avocados are a great source of healthy fat, especially monounsaturated oleic acid, which is also found in olive oil. Other important nutrients avocados have are fiber and potassium. The green fruit, that’s easy to spread, is also a healthier alternative to margarine and butter, Leech explains.
Many current diet trends eliminate carbs completely, but Leech describes them as “almost the perfect food.” He says this because they contain a little bit of almost every single nutrient we need. In addition to boiled potatoes, he suggests turnips and other root vegetables.
Most fruits are high in fiber and have a low energy density, which makes them a good substitution for calorie-dense, pre-packaged snacks.
Eggs have often been shamed for being high in cholesterol and fat, but they provide an excellent source of high-quality protein with few calories.
Nuts are high in fat, like avocados, and provide a great, plant-based source of protein. They’re a heart healthy food and most types contain omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and Vitamin E.
